Exercise 1: Creating a Project and Laying out Controls

If only all of Flex Builder could be so simple. Completed exercise 1 in about five minutes (that with two dogs barking at me and one trying to stand on my laptop and with no dual screen: the working conditions I must suffer!). Super easy. Certainly my experience with VB, and Dreamweaver, InDesign, etc., make it easier. Laying out controls is so very ho-hum. Really could have done that without the lessons and the exercise. But hey. I'm committed to the program and I'm suffering through every single last second of it. I'm truly convincing myself that it will pay off.

Did stop by the Flex in a Week forums though and scanned through a couple comments by people....certainly looks like some issues are coming! On to the next section....

Ready for Exercise No. 1

I'm hoping to tackle the first exercise tonight. Last night, once I installed the Flash plugin on Firefox on my home machine (Adobe Media Player does not run on Linux) I got caught up on my video lessons and apparently now I'm ready to start working.

The good thing about this whole video lesson process is that I'm being forced to learn how all the different pieces and tools work in Flex Builder Pro. This is not my usual way, at all.

Normally I dash into software applications and undergo trial by fire. Only afterwards do I find all the nifty tricks and shortcuts and cool tools that if I'd bothered to stop and learn would have saved a ton of time. Yes. It's true. I am one of those people who doesn't read the manual. I just try things until something works. Recently I re-calibrated the tires on my Smart Car to a new lower pressure--because I just decided to start punching buttons in the car (shudder to think of me in some sort of bond car) and didn't read the manual. I never learn.

Back to Flex. I like these videos so far as they offer some visual tips that help navigate the application and if I forget I can easily launch them again for a refresher. The only sad thing right now is that Flex Builder Pro ain't available for Linux. And...I'm loving my new home laptop now that it has Ubuntu on it and hate booting up my work laptop to run Flex Builder Pro. But so be it.

Though I could try a VM....mmm......

Back on Track. Sorta.

Well. The whole Linux experiment took all of 30 minutes. To install and configure. I'm not kidding. It took me three days to get my entire system working on Vista (had to install about five different patches and workarounds to get the scanner, printer, etc., to work) and then some things never really worked, like my wireless, which kept dropping the signal.

And I must confess, ten of the 30 minutes in installation was actually wasted assuming the wireless wasn't working on Ubuntu. Yeah. Not so. Instead it was confirmed once again I'm an idiot (new HP laptop has a wireless button...it was turned off...why do they make those stupid things anyway?). Yes, flummoxed by a stupid button. Embarrassing, but true. You will see. Stupid stuff like this happens all the time to me. This is the story of my life. So, I hit (possibly literally out of irritation) the button, and Ubuntu recognized my wireless, just asked me for my password before connecting. And hasn't dropped the connection once. Take that Vista.

So now that my home laptop is up and running with no issues, I'm back on track for Flex in a Week! Woo hoo! Though be prepared for many such duh! moments.
