Ready for Exercise No. 1

I'm hoping to tackle the first exercise tonight. Last night, once I installed the Flash plugin on Firefox on my home machine (Adobe Media Player does not run on Linux) I got caught up on my video lessons and apparently now I'm ready to start working.

The good thing about this whole video lesson process is that I'm being forced to learn how all the different pieces and tools work in Flex Builder Pro. This is not my usual way, at all.

Normally I dash into software applications and undergo trial by fire. Only afterwards do I find all the nifty tricks and shortcuts and cool tools that if I'd bothered to stop and learn would have saved a ton of time. Yes. It's true. I am one of those people who doesn't read the manual. I just try things until something works. Recently I re-calibrated the tires on my Smart Car to a new lower pressure--because I just decided to start punching buttons in the car (shudder to think of me in some sort of bond car) and didn't read the manual. I never learn.

Back to Flex. I like these videos so far as they offer some visual tips that help navigate the application and if I forget I can easily launch them again for a refresher. The only sad thing right now is that Flex Builder Pro ain't available for Linux. And...I'm loving my new home laptop now that it has Ubuntu on it and hate booting up my work laptop to run Flex Builder Pro. But so be it.

Though I could try a VM....mmm......
