About This Blog

This Blog

This blog is intended as a means of sharing the discoveries I make in the alternatingly exciting and mundane world of Flex and Java development, as well as a sounding board for my musings on the state of software development in general. I hope to share information that I've learned the "hard" way and save people the pain of figuring it all out themselves. I consider it a duty of gratitude to the many developers who have helped me out throughout the years (you know who you are).

My Background

I have been making web pages since 1994, have been developing in Java since 1999 and started developing in Flex in September of 2008. In the years before coming into the worlds of Java and Flex/AIR, I was paid to code in C/C++, Unix shell scripts, javascript and PERL and spent some time as a DBA/data analyst. I have experience training users, doing requirements analysis and design (mostly of the "OO" kind) and love thinking about and discussing the ins and outs of creating good sotware. I'm particularly interested in the creative process of making software and thrive on the idea of creating something (software) from nothing (an idea) to bring a tangible benefit to other people.

Aside From Work

I have lived in 3 countries (Canada, Belgium and Germany), three Canadian provinces (Ontario, Québec and British-Columbia), speak two languages fluently (English and French) and two not so well (German and Dutch). In my spare time, I enjoy playing sports (ice hockey, soccer, basketball and more), riding motorcycles and hanging out with friends and family.
